Amajita Book Their Spots in U20 AFCON Final and World Cup
The South African U20 men’s national team, known as Amajita, have booked their place in the final of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 28 years. They secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nigeria on Thursday night (May 15) at the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt.
The only goal of the match came in the 66th minute when Tylon Smith scored from a well-placed assist by Neo Rapoo. The win sends South Africa into the AFCON final, a stage they last reached in 1997 when they lost to Morocco.
Amajita’s road to the final has been a story of growth and resilience. Under the leadership of head coach Raymond Mdaka, the team overcame a rocky start to the tournament, which began with a defeat to hosts Egypt. Since then, they have bounced back strongly and grown with every game.
“Yes, another win, congratulations to the boys,” said Coach Mdaka after the match. “What a good job, good character, very disciplined, sticking to the agreements – tactical, technical. We really appreciate it. As much as it was not easy, our boys are growing in each and every match, growing in character and growing in everything. Thank you so much and well done boys – and well done for the country.”
The victory over Nigeria follows Amajita’s quarterfinal win over DR Congo, which not only secured their place in the semifinals but also qualified them for the upcoming FIFA U20 World Cup.
Football Association President Dr Danny Jordaan congratulated the team on their achievement, praising the players and coaching staff for making the country proud.
Amajita will now prepare for the finals on Sunday (May 18), where they hope to lift the continental title and continue their inspiring journey at the 2025 U20 AFCON tournament.
