Amajita Crowned Kings of Africa
South Africa’s U20 men’s national team, Amajita, have etched their names into football history by winning their first-ever U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
The South Africans defeated Morocco 1-0 in a tightly contested final at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, May 18.
Gomolemo Kekana’s stunning second-half strike proved decisive, as South Africa rewrote history by overcoming a North African opponent in the tournament for the first time.
The only goal of the final came in the 70th minute when Kekana unleashed a powerful right-footed effort from outside the box, bending the ball into the top corner. The goal, awarded after a VAR review, broke the deadlock in a match dominated by tactical discipline and defensive organisation from both sides.
Amajita’s road to the title saw them bounce back from a group stage defeat to Egypt, eliminate DR Congo in the quarterfinals, and edge past Nigeria in the semifinals before lifting the trophy in the final. The win also secured them a spot at the upcoming FIFA U20 World Cup, marking a new era for South African youth football.
This historic triumph ends a 28-year wait since South Africa last reached the U20 AFCON final in 1997 and signals a promising future for the next generation of football talent.
