Annual Kay Motsepe Schools Championship a resounding success

The 21st edition of the annual Kay Motsepe Schools Championship proved to be a resounding success, bringing together more than 10 thousands schools and guests at the Giant stadium in Soshanguve on Saturday, October 11.

Co-funded by Sanlam and the Motsepe Foundation with the endorsement of the South African Football Association (SAFA), the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship is the biggest national schools football competition.

The annual tournament bringing together both public and independent schools from around South Africa who compete for the right to be crowned champions of schools football.

Boasting a combined prize of R10 million in infrastructure development funding, the 2025 competition comprises three divisions: Under-19 boys, Under-13 boys and Under-13 girls.

In the under-13 category, Queenswood Boys claimed the boys’ title, and St. Anne’s Primary school triumphed in the girls’ division, each earning R1 million for their respective schools.

Fumani Academy from Gauteng secured the under 19 boys title in style with a dominant 1-0 win over St. Marks in the final, pocketing R3 million for infrastructure development.

Echoing his sentiment, Deputy Director of Sports and Enrichment at the Department of Basic Education, Bongani Zondi, highlighted the importance of sports in academic success.

“Sports instils values such as discipline, teamwork, social cohesion, and timekeeping, which contribute to academic success,” he stated.

Zondi added that the prize money will improve the school’s football facilities and benefit the entire communities.

The day concluded with a convivial price giving ceremony, attended by soccer Legends such as Hlombo Kekana, Teko Modise and Tiyani Mabunda.
