Arrests made in Westbury after Cele visit

A week after the police minister, Bheki Cele visited the Westbury community, officers have made progress in getting more offenders behind bars.

Four suspects have been arrested in Westbury after being found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and drugs.

Westbury has been plagued by a series of serious crimes like homicides and selling of drugs to youth, prompting Cele to instruct a deployment of various police units to stabilise the situation.

On Wednesday, March 8, members of the Sophiatown Crime Prevention Unit, National Intervention Unit and Tactical Response Team received information about alleged illegal activities at a certain flat in Westbury.

Upon searching the flat, four men were found with an unlicensed firearm, six live ammunition as well as 49 zip lock plastic bags of crystal meth and 34 zip locks of dagga.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear before a Magistrates’ Court soon, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, live ammunition and dealing in drugs.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has vowed to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that all those who continue to victimize the community of Westbury are put behind bars.

He expressed his satisfaction with the successful operations in Westbury and the arrest of those who are in possession of unlicensed firearms that are used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

Lieutenant General Mawela stated that the teams will continue to patrol every street and every passage of Sophiatown until the area is stabilised.

In a statement, Lieutenant General Mawela said, “I am pleased with the successful operations in Westbury and the arrest of those who are in possession of unlicenced firearms that are used in the commission of serious and violent crimes. The teams will continue to patrol every street and every passage of Sophiatown until the area is stabilised.”
