The Bafana Bafana footballers and the South African Football Association (SAFA) executives convened on Sunday, January 7 to establish the remuneration structures for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament scheduled to take place in Côte d’Ivoire this month.
The players’ representatives were composed of Ronwen Williams, Percy Tau, Siyanda Xulu, Veli Mothwa and Themba Zwane who signed the memorandum as delegates of the Bafana Bafana squad involved in this year’s edition of the continental championship.
The SAFA management comprised President Dr Danny Jordaan, Vice President Bennett Bailey, CEO Lydia Monyepao and HOD David Molwantwa.
“We are pleased that we had an opportunity to meet with our players, listen attentively to their concerns and reach a consensus on financial matters,” stated SAFA’s CEO.
“Bafana Bafana will perform well in this AFCON edition; it is gratifying that these issues are now resolved. We have discussed all necessary terms which remain confidential between management and players. Our focus is solely directed towards delivering a strong performance at AFCON,” added Dr Jordaan.
CAF has also announced the AFCON prize money has increased by 40%, with the winner bagging US$7 million (about R131 million). In this all-or-nothing deal, each player is expected to get R7 million each should they win.
“We want the team to focus and to perform. We don’t want to waste time on discussing unnecessary stuff.” Dr Jordaan said.
