Beloved Sports Presenter Phumlani Msibi Passes Away
The sports fraternity in South Africa is in shock and mourning following the passing of renowned sports presenter Phumlani Msibi.
The 57-year-old veteran broadcaster, known for his iconic phrase ‘Coach, thoughts please’, left an indelible mark on the sports broadcasting landscape.
Msibi’s illustrious career spanned decades, during which he made history as SuperSport’s first isiZulu-English boxing commentator.
He became a household name in South African football, anchoring shows like Soccer Africa and Mzansi Legends after the Premier Soccer League (PSL) broadcast deal in 2007.
Dubbed “Mr. Versatile” for his exceptional storytelling skills and passion for sports, Msibi’s contributions to SuperSport were immense.
He started his career as a ring announcer with the late boxing promoter Mzi Mnguni in the late 1990s before transitioning to commentary.
SuperSport confirmed Msibi’s passing in a statement on Saturday June 21 saying, “We are saddened to learn of the passing of our legendary sports commentator, presenter, and anchor. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, and colleagues following this great loss.”
Born on December 15, 1967, in Durban, Msibi’s legacy will be remembered for his humility, insight, and passion for sports.
