An assortment of weapons were found a an unoccupied doctor’s quarters at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in the early hours of Sunday, September 20.
The acting MEC for Health in Gauteng, Jacob Mamabolo has expressed his concern over the discovery.
The items were found by security guards doing their normal rounds. Nobody working in the hospital has claimed responsibility.
They found about 47 bullets, three 9mm handguns, two pepper sprays, two handcuffs and a SAPS reflector vest with matching police cap.
According to the department, the reason why the doctor’s quarters is not used is because the place is due to be renovated.
The matter has been handed over to the Diepkloof SAPS who have since opened a case and are conducting further investigations.
“It is deeply concerning that an unaccounted-for assortment of ammunition was found in a space that is meant to look after patients’ healthcare.”
We call on the police to get to the bottom of this and ensure that if these weapons were used to commit any l crime those responsible are brought to book,” said MEC Mamabolo.
