Deputy minister Hlengiwe Mkhize passes away at 69


The Deputy Minister of Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Professor Hlengiwe Buhle Mkhize, had died at age of 69.

Government is yet to confirm the details regarding her passing.

Professor Mkhize was a former Minister of Higher Education and Training, having been appointed since October 2017, after previously serving as Deputy Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services.


A dedicated and educated public servant

Prof Mkhize is a founder member and a trustee of the Children and Violence Trust, she has been a trustee of the Malibongwe Business Trust from 2005.

She has been chairperson of the Peace Commission of the South African Women in Dialogue since 2004; she is treasurer general of the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League (ANCWL), and has been a member of the National Executive Committee of the ANCWL since 2008.

Her academic qualifications includes: a BA degree in Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology from the University of Zululand obtained in 1976; a BA Honours in Psychology from the University of Natal obtained in 1978; and a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Natal obtained in 1981.

Prof Mkhize is Honorary Professor of Psychology at the University of South Africa and is studying towards a PhD through the University of Natal.
