Dipaleseng Municipality Distributes Food Parcels to Vulnerable Families

Ten vulnerable families in the Dipaleseng community received much-needed food assistance on Thursday, October 9, as part of a follow-up initiative to the Provincial Heritage Day celebrations.

Executive Mayor Councillor Busi Khanye led the handover ceremony, distributing food parcels that remained from an initial batch of 20 provided during the heritage festivities. The donation was made possible through a partnership with the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA).

The Department of Social Development’s local office identified the beneficiaries, including a family from Balfour North who recently lost their home to fire.

The initiative highlights ongoing efforts by the municipality and provincial agencies to address food insecurity and poverty in the region.

“This food parcel is more than just food. It is a symbol of hope in our darkest hour. We thank you for not forgetting about us,” said one beneficiary during the ceremony.

Mayor Khanye used the platform to address pressing social concerns affecting the community. She spoke about the urgent need to combat gender-based violence and femicide, calling for collective action against these ongoing challenges.

Recognizing October as Cancer Awareness Month, the mayor also urged residents to prioritize cancer prevention and early detection. “This month allows us to reflect on the impact of cancer and unite in creating awareness about early detection and the support available to those affected,” she stated.

The mayor further encouraged community members to register on the municipal indigent register to access a wider range of social support services. “Our indigent programme exists to cushion those most in need. Registration ensures that we can assist families timeously and effectively,” Khanye explained.

The event was attended by Councillor Muzikayise Makhoba, Councillor Zebelon Radebe, who serves as Ward 2 Councillor and Chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), and the Ward 5 Councillor.

The initiative demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to supporting residents during times of hardship through strategic partnerships with provincial agencies.
