Ekurhuleni honours women liberation heroes in Women’s Month tribute

City of Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, paid tribute to some of the city’s phenomenal women who played a pivotal role in South Africa’s liberation struggle.

The recognition ceremony took place on Thursday (August 28) at the Council Chamber in Germiston on the sidelines of Council meeting.

The Mayor urged councillors and residents alike to join him in celebrating the sacrifices and contributions of these heroines, saying their efforts continue to inspire the pursuit of freedom and equality in the country.

Handing out certificates of recognition, Xhakaza reminded the gathering of the immense personal sacrifices made by women in the fight against apartheid.

“These women sacrificed so much for this freedom. Today we celebrate their unwavering dedication and selflessness to get us to this democracy we now enjoy,” said the Executive Mayor.

He further highlighted the significance of August as a time to reflect on the historic role women have played in shaping South Africa, referencing the iconic 1956 women’s march against pass laws.

“In August it is very important that we pause and reflect on the role of women in shaping a better future for all – dating back to the march against pass laws of 1956,” Xhakaza added.

The five women honoured in council were:

  • Marion Sparg – former anti-apartheid activist and journalist.
  • Elizabeth Mbele – struggle veteran.
  • Mary Moodley (posthumously) – trade unionist and political leader.
  • Andronica Matsilisi Matlala – community leader.
  • Nonyi Mtshali – activist and organiser.

The recognition formed part of the City of Ekurhuleni’s Women’s Month programme, aimed at acknowledging both historical and contemporary contributions of women to South Africa’s democracy.
