Ekurhuleni Metro Police seize illicit cigarettes worth R5.5 million


After officers of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) received a tip-off that there will be a transportation of illicit cigarettes to a plot in Crystal Park, they acted swiftly.

“The members of the EMPD STT (Specialized Task Team) Unit responded immediately to the information and on the arrival at a Plot in Putfontein Crystal Park. They discovered a one Freightliner horse and a trailer, a Hino Truck,” explains EMPD media liaison officer, Lerato Monyane.

The arrest occurred on Tuesday afternoon, June 29, after officers discovered 878 boxes containing illegal cigarettes were recovered with an estimated street value of R5.5 million.

“Seven suspects were apprehended at the scene and detained for Possession of illicit Cigarettes at Crystal Park SAPS and are expected to appear at the Daveyton Magistrate Court soon,” said Monyane
