Ekurhuleni Residents Disgruntled Over Water Cuts
Residents of Duduza township and the surrounding areas have expressed their frustrations over water shortages.
This comes after the City of Ekurhuleni issued a warning last week that it could take up to two weeks before the system fully recovers due to Rand Water’s maintenance project.
However, some residents claimed they were not aware and were taken by surprise when their taps suddenly went dry.
Sanah Sibanyoni, 55, said, “I’m a patient with a chronic disease and I have to take my medication daily. This situation of sudden water cuts and the issues of load shedding simply prove that our government does not care for its people; they only care when they want votes.”
Another community member, Thomas Radebe, 47, commented, “What is happening right now is really bad because children could not go to school and other people even missed going to work because there was no water to bathe. Patients are also affected in clinics and hospitals due to water shortages.”
According to the spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, Zweli Dlamini, roaming water tankers have been dispatched to the affected areas.
“We urge residents to be patient as we are trying to ensure that we dispatch water tankers to all the affected areas to mitigate the situation. The bulk water supplier has indicated that they have completed the maintenance work and are in the process of charging their lines and reinstating pumping.”
Affected areas include Tsakane, Kwa-Thema, Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Daveyton, Etwatwa, Vosloorus, and Benoni.
