EMPD officer dies in shoot-out with illegal miners

An Ekurhuleni Metro Police officer was fatally wounded after a shoot-out with illegal miners in Primrose, Germiston on Tuesday morning (June 22).

“Police received a tip-off about illegal mining in the Germiston area in Primrose at corner Main and Shamrock Street. When police arrived, the miners opened fire which led to one officer being fatally wounded,” said the EMPD.

Three suspects were arrested and sent to the Primrose Police Station, facing charges of illegal mining, murder and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

According to the Metro Police, it was only yesterday that the late officer received a medal for his long-standing commitment to serving the EMPD for the past 39 years
