Fake abortion doctor, mother nabbed for concealing birth

Police in Johannesburg arrested two suspects, aged 20 and 36, for concealment of birth on Friday, April 22.

The first suspect nabbed is a 20 year old woman who was seven months pregnant, and the other suspect is a Ugandan national who was masquerading as a doctor.

“It is alleged that the female suspect and her boyfriend visited a flat at Albert Street on April 21. The couple paid three thousand Rands and an abortion was conducted by the bogus doctor and his accomplice ‘nurse’.

Later, the pregnant lady told her mother that she had a miscarriage at an Alexandra Clinic.

“Her aunt took her the following day to the clinic to collect a fetus for burial; she discovered that she did not visit the facility. She eventually confessed and added that she was transferred to Edenvale Hospital for medical reasons,” explained police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele.

The police were contacted and took her to point out where the abortion took place. The fake doctor was immediately apprehended and the nurse accomplice, who took a fetus, is still at large.

Police investigation is underway and suspects have appeared in court on Monday, April 25.

“Johannesburg Central Station Commander Brigadier Perumal commended swift response by the police. He urged females who are pregnant not to risk with their lives by visiting unregistered places for termination of pregnancy,” concluded Mbele.
