Gauteng Schools Wednesday Champions League begins in September 2025

School sport in Gauteng continues to thrive, this is as the all-exciting Schools Wednesday Champions League makes a return for its 3rd edition. 

The league was launched amid funfair at the Kagiso Memorial in the West Rand on Wednesday, August 27.

A total of 47 schools from across Gauteng will compete for top provincial honours in football, netball and volleyball.The games will be played every Wednesday in September, beginning on the 3rd and concluding with the finals on the 23rd.

The Wednesday Champions League programme is a proud initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Government to further enhance the development of School Sport in the province and in the country.

Meanwhile, defending champions Clapham High School and Jabulile Secondary School, both return to defend their titles in the under 17 boys’ and girls’ football, respectively.

The 2024 under 17 girls volleyball champions, Lukhanyo High School are also in the competition to defend their crown. Not defending their titles are the boys under-17 volleyball and under 14 netball champs, Mpilisweni High and Moletsane High schools respectively, who didn’t qualify.

Each winning team will receive R50,000 worth of sporting equipment and consumables.  

Acting Chief Director for Sport and Recreation, Philasande Muvevi spoke on behalf of Gauteng MEC for Sport. Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane.

According to her the programme has “helped boost participation and enthusiasm among learners, reinforcing the importance of sport in education.

She added, “It (programme) is geared towards ensuring that youngsters have regular participation and compete at higher levels to becoming top national and international athletes”, said Muvevi. 

Dates and venues for the Games:

  • 3 September 2025: WJ Clements Stadium (Reiger Park)
  • 10 September 2025: Hoërskool Voortrekkerhoogte (Boksburg)
  • 17 September 2025: Moletsane Sport Complex (Soweto)
  • 23 September 2025: Vaal University of Technology (Vanderbjilpark)
