Gauteng Welcomes China’s Entry Into Its Local Automotive Manufacturing Sector

The Gauteng Provincial Government, together with the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC), has welcomed the entry of Chinese automaker Chery Automobile into Gauteng’s automotive manufacturing landscape, describing it as a significant milestone for the province’s industrial future.

AIDC has also welcomed Chery’s commitment to absorb the existing workforce at the former Nissan plant, a move that will ensure continuity of employment and the retention of critical automotive manufacturing skills within the province.

The decision is seen as a strong vote of confidence in Gauteng’s skilled labour force and reinforces the province’s appeal as a destination for advanced automotive investment.

According to AIDC, the presence of the adjacent Automotive Supplier Park further strengthens the business case for Chery’s investment. The facility is expected to support localisation, supplier development, and deeper integration across the automotive value chain, aligning with national and provincial industrialisation objectives.

The development is anticipated to generate positive spill-over effects for component manufacturers, logistics providers, and small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the automotive sector. These benefits are expected to contribute to broader economic growth and job creation within Gauteng.

AIDC has congratulated both Nissan and Chery on the successful transition and indicated its readiness to support all stakeholders as the investment progresses, positioning the project as a key driver of sustainable industrial development in the province.
