In a statement, Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has confirmed that his latest tests have come back positive for the coronavirus.
“I wish to inform the public that this afternoon my wife, Dr May Mkhize and I have tested positive for COVID-19. We decided to go test yesterday when I started showing mild symptoms,” said the minister.
According to the minister, he was feeling abnormally exhausted and as the day progressed and he started losing his appetite. His wife had a cough, was dizzy and extremely exhausted. She was later admitted for observation due to the symptoms.
Dr Mkhize also confirmed that only family members and some of my Health Ministry team were in close contact with them recently. “We have informed them and advised them to immediately isolate in their homes and be tested,” he said.
Both the minister and his wife are in self-isolation at home and are very optimistic they will recover.
Plea to continue adhering to health protocols
The minister has also urged all citizens to continue to comply with the COVID-19 health guidelines and rules.
South Africa has seen another sharp rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths recently. Over 700,000 cases have been recorded to date.
