The newly formed ‘Operation Kurhula’ paid off on its first day when officers arrested a driver with a truck carrying illicit cigarettes on the N12 in Etwatwa on Friday, April 16.
Operation Kurhula is a crime prevention intervention targeting lawlessness around the City of Ekurhuleni, led by Community Safety MMC Frans Mmoko and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).
The EMPD Task team stopped a truck smuggling illicit cigarettes. The truck and its contents were impounded by police.
“At 14:00, following Crime Intelligence information received, a truck from Zimbabwe was caught smuggling illicit cigarette worth more than R1 million,” said the EMPD in a statement.
The MMC Cllr iterated that smuggling of illicit cigarettes was not tolerated as it cripples the country’s fiscal.
The driver caught smuggling cigarettes faces charges of ‘possession and possible dealing in of illicit cigarettes’ and will appear at the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.
