Joburg mayor Geoff Makhubo passes on

The executive mayor in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Moloantoa Geoffrey Makhubo has died to COVID-19 related complications.

News of his passing was shared on social media on Friday afternoon (July 9).

Geoff Makhubo, as he was popularly known, was admitted to hospital last week due to his condition getting worse.

His office reported last month that the mayor contracted the coronavirus and was in isolation at home.

A seasoned political servant

Before serving as Mayor in 2019, he has held various positions in the Joburg Council; having served as the Leader of the Opposition in Council from August 2016 and as the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance in the City of Johannesburg from 2011 to 2016.

He has also held the positions of Leader of Executive Business in Council and that of Chairperson of the Governance Cluster.

The Executive Mayor was previously elected as the Co-President of the Metropolis Global Fund for Cities’ Development (FMDV).

He currently holds the position of Chairperson of the African National Congress in the Greater Johannesburg Region and was previously the Regional Treasurer and in his youth, the Chairperson of the ANC Youth League in the Region.

Councillor Makhubo holds a B.Com degree from Witwatersrand University (Wits) in 1990 and a Management Advancement Programme (MAP) with Wits Business School in 1997.

He also holds a Leadership in Local Government certificate with the University of Cape Town.

Currently, the Executive Mayor was enrolled for a Master’s Degree with Wits University.

Amongst his various specialities, he has skills and experience acquired in Business Analysis, Risk Management and Auditing, Financial Analysis/Feasibility Analysis and Financial Modelling.

His areas of expertise include Strategic Planning, Finance and Accounting, Business Process Re- engineering, Information Technology (Enterprise Resource Planning), Cost-Benefit Analysis and Information Management.
