Katlehong police continue community engagements

The Acting Station Commander in Katlehong, Colonel Erasmus, led his team of officers when they participated in a public meeting on Sunday, July 24.

Officers went to to the Mosiliki section (also known as Sector 1 to police) to engage with the community on different crimes that are affecting them and trying to come up with solutions that will enhance both the Police and community to fight crime.

Earlier this month, the officers held an engagement with religious leaders from various denominations in the area, including a door-to-door crime awareness campaign to address Gender-based Violence in Ramokonopi West.

“The Acting Station Commander Colonel Erasmus, who is also Head of Vispol policing accompanied by Acting Branch Commander Lieutenant Colonel Sekhu, Sector manager Sgt Senoa, Cimac Sgt Chabalala, Crime Prevention Members, Reservists and CPF members led by Phindile Ntuli who is the chairperson were among the attendees that form part of the public engagement with the community,” Katlehong police spokesperson Constable Sivenkosi Mtwa.

Ward councillor Fana Nkosi was the one leading the community engagement session.

Community want answers

Various discussions were discussed and issues were raised.

Top of the list of topics was the scrounge of drugs in the area and drug-related crimes.

Another thing raised by police was their need for the members of thebcommunity who will help them in identifying the drug dealers, and give information to police anonymously on crime stop line which is 08600 10111 alternatively use MySAPS app that can be downloaded to any smartphone.

“Community patrollers also need to be added that will patrol their own communities during the night whereby most of the crime is committed,” Constable Mtwa said.

During question and answer (Q&A) session Colonel Erasmus took the opportunity to educate the public about processes that follows after one has been arrested stating that: “everyone has a right to bail and it doesn’t mean after getting bail they are free from their deeds (crime) and there are court proceedings one has to follow till the Magistrate decides on a case “said Col Erasmus.
