Mandoza’s Legacy Lives On: Nkalakatha Festival Celebrates 25 Years of Iconic Song

In a powerful tribute to the late Kwaito legend Mandoza, his widow Mpho Tshabalala has announced the upcoming Nkalakatha Festival, celebrating 25 years of the iconic song that united South Africa.

“I am so excited that we are able to celebrate the 25 years of the existence of Nkalakatha with a Merchandise collaboration with Lecoq Sportif and the upcoming tributary Nkalakatha Fest that will take place in his honour ,” Mpho said.

Mandoza, born Mduduzi Thembinkosi Edmund Tshabalala, was a renowned South African singer-songwriter and kwaito musician.

He rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s with hits like Nkalakatha, Uzoyithola Kanjani, and Tornado. His music addressed social issues and inspired young South Africans to strive for their goals.

Mandoza’s journey was marked by challenges, including a stint in prison for car theft at the age of 16. However, he turned his life around and channeled his energy into music, forming the group Chiskop with childhood friends.

His breakthrough came with the release of Nkalakatha in 2000, which won Song of the Year at the South African Music Awards.

Tragically, Mandoza passed away on September 18, 2016, after a battle with pharyngeal (throat) cancer. He was 38 years old. His legacy lives on through his music and the impact he had on the South African music scene.

The Nkalakatha Festival, scheduled for Saturday December 20, at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg, promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Mandoza’s life and music.

The event will feature a multi-genre lineup, including Kwaito, Gqom, Amapiano, Rock, and Gospel, with special tribute performances honoring Mandoza’s legacy.

A portion of the proceeds will go towards a new initiative that aims on empowering young South Africans through education and opportunity. “Part of the finds will help us launch the Nkalakatga bursary fund in 2026.”

The festival will also feature the Nkalakatha Village, an immersive space filled with South African cuisine, art, storytelling, exclusive merchandise, and interactive brand experiences.

“We will remember him by continuing with his Legacy through the Nkalakatha Festival and Lecoq Sportif collaboration,” Mpho said, concluding that the festival will keep Mandoza’s legacy alive and vibrant, celebrate his music, passion, and community spirit, unite fans, friends, and family to remember his impact. It will also introduce his artistry to new generations through Lecoq Sportif’s younger audience and continue his charitable work through festival proceeds funding community development.”
