Metro cop arrested for Katlehong tavern shooting
An Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) officer was arrested on Friday, July 22, suspected to be involved in the Katlehong tavern shooting that took place on earlier this month.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Safety, Cllr Lethlogonolo Moseki has called for justice to be served following the arrest of a suspect allegedly involved in the fatal crime that took place a tavern in Kwanele section.
“As a result, six people were shot, with two of them dying instantly on the scene and the wounded four were rushed to hospital. Police found about 19 cartridges as well as 13 live ammunition at the scene,” confirmed by Katlehong police spokesperson Constable Sivenkosi Mtwa.
The arrest is the fruits of the manhunt operation that was launched by the South African Police (SAPS), after there were other similar shooting incidents that took place in Soweto and Kwa-Zulu Natal around the same time.
The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that the EMPD officer will face disciplinary procedures.
“We applaud the police for the swift arrest of the suspected shooter in the Katlehong Tavern shooting. It doesn’t matter if he is a member of the EMPD, if the individual is guilty, justice must be served. The suspect will not receive any pity or special treatment from the side of the city. We will be observing the developments of this case with a close eye.” Said MMC Moseki.
