Mzansi and China Strengthen Strategic Ties in “Golden Era” of Cooperation
President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized the significance of the growing partnership between the two nations.
In his opening remarks at official talks with President Xi during his State Visit to China on Monday (September 2) President Ramaphosa highlighted the deep-rooted friendship, recalling President Xi’s 2023 visit to South Africa, marking 25 years of diplomatic relations.
“We have entered a ‘golden era’ of cooperation,” Ramaphosa stated, affirming the strategic importance of the alliance.
He expressed South Africa’s commitment to upgrading their relationship to an “All-Round Strategic Cooperative Partnership,” a move designed to strengthen political and economic ties.
Ramaphosa outlined South Africa’s focus on key areas such as development, trade, and addressing global challenges.
“We were encouraged by the inward procurement mission of Chinese companies last year. We urge for more sustainable manufacturing and job-creating investments,” he said, stressing the need to reduce the trade deficit between the two countries.
The South African president also emphasized their shared objectives, particularly in promoting the interests of Africa and the Global South.
He reiterated South Africa’s commitment to the One China Policy and progressive internationalism, further cementing their cooperation on multilateral platforms like the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the BRICS framework.
As both countries face significant geopolitical and economic challenges, Ramaphosa called for continued collaboration: “We should continue to consult closely in pursuit of a just, equitable, and prosperous world.”
Ramaphosa concluded by expressing confidence in the future of South Africa-China relations, stating, “Our elevated levels of mutual trust will accommodate each other’s interests, views, and concerns – and deepen our cooperation as we build a shared future.”
The State visit marks another step forward in the comprehensive cooperation between the two nations, setting the stage for further collaboration in addressing global and regional challenges.
