Mzansi celebrates Proteas T20 World Cup journey

South Africans and cricket lovers worldwide were at the edge of their seats as the Proteas took on the undefeated India in Barbados on Saturday, June 29.

While the Proteas came second in the ICC Men’s T20 final, their defeat showcased the resilience and spirit of national pride, President Cyril Ramaphosa said.

South Africa has been in great form this season in the first-ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, stepping into the final undefeated.

“Well done to the Proteas for an outstanding performance during the tournament to reach the final. The nation shares your pain in your fall at the last hurdle, but we thank you for hoisting our flag high on the global stage, playing against India.

“You have shown resilience and the true spirit that reflects our nation’s pride. We also offer congratulations to Rohit Sharma and the Board of Control for Cricket in India on their unbeaten run on the way to a well-deserved championship,” the President said in a statement.

Proteas Captain Aiden Markram says the loss to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Final will inspire his side to greater things in the future.

“Hopefully it’s one step closer,” he said afterwards.

“It’s tournament cricket, it’s tough cricket, it’s not easy to win trophies and you’ve got to take your hats off to a team like India for lifting the trophy. A lot of hard work goes into it.

“But yeah, we’d like to think we’re one step closer and hopefully moving forward we can get that first win and it can be a snowball effect of quite a few to come.”

Fans took to social media to express their appreciation for the sterling performance by the Proteas.

“Their journey to the finals itself is a testament to their skill, dedication, and commitment to representing our nation with pride on the global stage. Sport has always been a unifying force in our country, transcending boundaries and fostering camaraderie among our citizens,” Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) acting Director-General, Nomonde Mnukwa said.

Government has extended a heartfelt thank you to the players, coaching staff, and support personnel for their efforts, and their service to the country through sport.
