The Gauteng Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, led by the Chairperson Honourable William Matsheke wish to send its heartfelt condolences to the Mathebula Family on the passing on of Mr Peter “Terror” Mathebula who was the first black World Champion. Mathebula won the WBA World Championship in 1980 in the USA.
Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Ms Mbali Hlophe, also extended her heartfelt sympathies to the Mathebula family where tragedy has struck twice.
Following the passing of the legendary boxer Peter ‘Terror’ Mathebula on Saturday (18 January), his wife ma Emma Gabaitsiwe Mathebula has also passed-on, five days after his death.
“We are deeply distraught by the latest developments of the passing of mme Mathebula, the wife of legendary boxer Peter ‘Terror’ Mathebula. No one could have expected this but still, we say, ‘death be not proud’.
After he began his professional career in 1971 Terror Mathebula became flyweight in 1978 and bantamweight champion in 1979. Mathebula became WBA World Flyweight Champion on 13 December 1980 after his victory over Kim Tae-Shik However, after his loss to Santos Laciar on 28 March 1981 Mathebula’s career declined. He retired in 1983 with a record of 36 wins and 9 losses.Source: Wikipedia
“On behalf of all the sports and boxing loving people of Gauteng, we want to extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the entire Mathebula family. We are all greatly saddened and wish them strength, peace and love during this difficult time. We celebrate their lives and admire Mme Emma’s strength, patience and support to her husband, Terror Mathebula. We believe they have been the best of friends and each other’s pillar of strength to the end of life. We pray their loved ones will be sparred unending sorrow.”
According to the family, the legendary boxer passed away at Leratong hospital following an illness aged 68 years. The family arranged a joint funeral as a final send-off of their loving parents‚ who remained joined in love till death, on January 28.
