Mzansi schools set to compete in CAF Schools Championship
The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education and the South African Football Association, is pleased to announce the send-off ceremony for Ubuntu Academy School and Edendale Technical High School.
These schools will proudly represent South Africa at the prestigious 2024 CAF Africa School Championship Cup, scheduled to take place from May 21st to May 24th, 2024, in Zanzibar. The event will feature a total of 20 teams, including 10 boys’ teams and 10 girls’ teams.
The CAF Africa School Championship Cup, now in its third edition, emerged from FIFA’s initial launch as the “Pan Africa School Champions Cup.” The tournament’s primary objective is to foster the growth and advancement of school-level football across the African continent.
South Africa’s representatives in the boys’ category will be Ubuntu Academy School from the Western Cape, while Edendale Technical High School from KwaZulu-Natal will proudly represent the girls’ category.
Notably, Edendale Technical High School is gearing up for their third consecutive appearance in the CAF Africa School Championship Cup. Both schools earned their spots by clinching victory at the 2023 Winter National School Sport Championships, held in Gauteng’s Benoni region in July 2023. Subsequently, they triumphed at the Regional (COSAFA) stage held in Zimbabwe last December.
The significance of school sports championships extends beyond the competitive arena.
These events serve as catalysts for the implementation of organized sports programs within schools, aligning with the broader institutional and legislative frameworks outlined during the 2011 Sports Indaba. By providing learners with structured opportunities to engage in sporting activities, these initiatives contribute to holistic development and the cultivation of sporting talent from a grassroots level.
The send-off function for Ubuntu Academy School and Edendale Technical High School will take place on May 17th, 2024, at Fun Valley in Johannesburg.
