National ‘Family meeting’ scheduled for this Sunday
Mzansi will have to reschedule their festive season to accommodate a possible tighter lockdown in the coming days.
This as President Cyril Ramaphosa will convene the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) on Sunday, November 28, to assess developments in the COVID-19 pandemic, including scientific updates around the newly detected coronavirus variant.
It is believed that the president will address the nation after the meetings have been concluded.
This may usher new lockdown restrictions that will move the country from Alert Level 1 lockdown currently in place.
The National Coronavirus Command Council is one of several structures of government – which include the President’s Coordinating Council and Cabinet – where scientific evidence and submissions by different economic and social sectors inform executive decision-making.
Government works together closely with social partners to ensure that a balance is maintained between protecting and saving lives, and enabling people to earn a living and making it possible for the broader economy to recover and grow.
The outcomes of the NCCC discussions and further consultations will be communicated in the coming days.
The announcement was made by Minister in The Presidency Mondli Gungubele on Friday, November 26, addressing the current developments regarding the B.1.1.529 variant.
According to the minister, the detection by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) of a new coronavirus variant demonstrates South Africa’s constant vigilance and scientific capability in our management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The NICD is in intensive engagement with all established surveillance systems to understand the new variant and what the potential implications could be.
“While this work continues, South Africans must take all measures to protect themselves against coronavirus infection, beginning with vaccination against COVID-19,” said minister Gungubele.
