New Multipurpose Sports Court Launched to Benefit Local Youth
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, in partnership with Orlando Pirates, Nedbank, and The Sports Trust, handed over a new multipurpose sports court on September 9, 2024, at Job Rathebe Junior Secondary School in Soweto.
The handover ceremony was led by Minister of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, Gayton McKenzie, highlighting the government’s dedication to promoting sports and an active lifestyle among South African youth.
The new sports facility is designed to accommodate a range of sports, including soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball, and tennis.
This is the second court installed in the area, following the success of the first at Lofentse Girls High School last year.
The project underscores the partners’ commitment to fostering sports development across genders and promoting healthy living among Soweto’s youth.
As part of the 2023/2024 Nedbank Cup season prize, Orlando Pirates, the tournament champions, selected Job Rathebe Junior Secondary School as the beneficiary.
The court will benefit not only the school’s 762 learners but also the surrounding community and neighboring schools, ensuring widespread access and inclusivity.
To date, the Nedbank Cup program has built nine multipurpose courts, empowering under-resourced communities and creating opportunities for aspiring athletes across the country.
