Nominations open for GP District Women in Sports Awards

Following the successful 2020/2021 edition of the district and Gauteng Women in Sports Awards earlier this year, Futballing Girls is excited to open calls for nominations for the 2021/2022 edition.

The awards are aimed at commemorating and empowering women in the local sporting fraternity with the province of Gauteng.

The awards are organized by the non-profit, Futballing Girls, who have since 2015 are at the forefront of grassroots girl’s football.

Over the years, however, it quickly transformed into an organization dedicated to addressing different aspects and areas affecting the growth and development of female sports and female athletes.

This year’s edition was launched virtually (due to strict lockdown regulations in place at the time) on Friday, July 23.

Established in 2018, the awards were first celebrated in Ekurhuleni and has since expanded to various districts within the Gauteng region, namely City of Johannesburg, West Rand District, City of Tshwane, and Sedibeng District.

The awards inspired a vast amount of women to strive not only for recognition but for upliftment from grassroots level to elite professionals in sports.

Futballing Girls Founder, Moonira Ramathula said the awards are meant to play a critical role in sport at a district and local level, acknowledging the impact of women on and off the field.

“As much as its been a difficult year for sport with most sporting activities either not taking place or very little taking place we felt that we needed to continue with the recognition and creation of platforms of women in sport,” she said.
