One Arrested After Deadly Cash-In-Transit Heist in Dawn Park

Police have confirmed the arrest of one suspect following a violent cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on Barry Marais Road in the Dawn Park near Vosloorus that left two bystanders dead.

According to authorities, the incident unfolded on Monday (September 1) when a silver Mercedes-Benz rammed a cash vehicle from behind, causing it to overturn onto a quantum taxi carrying seven passengers.

Five occupants sustained injuries and received medical treatment, while two others escaped unharmed.

Eight suspects reportedly bombed the cash vehicle and fled with an undisclosed amount of money. A shootout ensued between the suspects and a nearby security company, during which two bystanders were fatally caught in the crossfire.

In a swift operation, Gauteng Highway Patrol and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, acting on intelligence, tracked one suspect to a safe house in Rondebult. Officers recovered a rifle, five magazines of ammunition, stained banknotes, and two vehicles — a silver Mercedes-Benz and a BMW — believed to have been used in the crime.

Police say investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to trace the remaining suspects.

Authorities have also cautioned the public against approaching cash-in-transit crime scenes or attempting to pick up money scattered during such incidents.

“The community should remain vigilant of their surroundings at all times and report any criminal activities to the SAPS Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111,” police urged in a statement.
