A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday night, July 2, on the Vaal Dam Road (R549) near Tokohong, resulting in the death of an unidentified pedestrian.
According to a statement from Ratanda police, the incident involved a Nissan truck.
The driver reported that while traveling towards Karan Beef, he noticed a person suddenly crossing the road in the dark. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the driver swerved, but the pedestrian moved in the same direction. As a result, the truck struck the pedestrian and dragged the body to the side of the road.
Sgt. Maluleke, Ratanda’s Communications Officer, provided further details: “The driver immediately stopped and called the police. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to the scene and sadly declared the pedestrian deceased.”
The deceased is described as an African male, approximately 40 years old. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
The Vaal Dam road is a busy route for locals, travellers and trucks, with the long strip of road bearing little to no lighting in most parts.
