Rand West City Plans Major Upgrade for Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium
The Rand West City Local Municipality has confirmed that it is in talks with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to upgrade the Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng.
Executive Mayor Cllr William Matsheke said the project aims to align the stadium’s infrastructure with PSL standards.
This will not only ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience for spectators but also make the venue suitable for hosting top-flight football matches.
Named after the late footballer, Patrick “Ace” Ntsoelengoe, who is remembered as one of South Africa’s greatest footballers, the municipality aims for the infrastructure upgrade to boost the local economy.
Born in Randfontein, Ntsoelengoe rose to stardom with Kaizer Chiefs and went on to make his mark in the North American Soccer League, where he played for clubs such as the Minnesota Kicks and Toronto Blizzard.
Known as a midfield maestro with exceptional skill and vision, Ntsoelengoe was inducted into the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2003 and posthumously awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by the South African government in 2008. His legacy continues to inspire generations of footballers in Mohlakeng and across the country.
“The upgrade is also expected to attract PSL clubs to consider Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium as a potential home ground,” said Matsheke in a statement.
The announcement follows the Mayor’s State of the City Address on June 6, where he outlined plans to pursue a partnership with Kaizer Chiefs Football Club.
The initiative is in honour of legendary footballer Patrick “Ace” Ntsoelengoe, who hailed from Mohlakeng.
Mayor Matsheke described the stadium project as a major step toward realising that vision:
“We are getting closer to achieving this goal, which will be a source of great pride for the Ntsoelengoe family, the Mohlakeng community, and the city at large.”
Beyond sports, the municipality expects the stadium upgrade to stimulate economic growth and create jobs. Local businesses stand to benefit from increased foot traffic and commercial activity, particularly on PSL match days.
According to the Municipality, the project reflects the municipality’s commitment to community pride, economic development, and promoting local talent.
