Ratanda community stage protest

Weeks after community members took a stand to reclaim their local economy by advocating for the removal of foreign nationals who own Spaza shops, and replacing them with locals, residents in Ratanda have been met with challenges.

Reports of violence, including shootings and intimidation, has surfaced in the community, allegedly targeted at the new movement seeking to reclaim the local economy. This is also coupled by multiple service delivery-related issues that are the responsibility of Lesedi Local Municipality.

In response, members of the community have staged a protest in the Ratanda area on Monday (February 26). It is expected that morning traffic will be disrupted and police presence is expected to be heightened to prevent any outbreaks of violence and facilitate peaceful demonstrations.

Many residents feel that these businesses, often run by immigrants, have encroached upon their economic opportunities and eroded the fabric of the community.

One community member, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed their frustration, stating, “We have seen our local economy suffer as more and more Spaza shops are owned by foreigners. It’s time for us to take back control of our neighborhood and support our own businesses.”

The sentiment is echoed by others who see the protest as a necessary step towards reclaiming economic sovereignty. They view the influx of foreign-owned businesses as a threat to local entrepreneurship and employment opportunities.
