Rest In Peace to Wheelchair Basketball legend Wiseman Dlamini

Wiseman Dhlamini, the sportsman, wheelchair basketball player and coach of the Diesel Electric Services Eagles basketball team, was a part of the Gauteng wheelchair basketball team for senior men, has passed away.

Wiseman has been associated with WBSA for over a decade, progressing from being a player to being part of the administration team. 

He was also the team manager for the national wheelchair basketball team for senior men’s side.

Wheelchair Basketball South Africa on Facebook shared the news of Dlamini’s passing on Monday, January 8.

“It is with complete shock and immense sadness that we received confirmation of brother, friend and colleague, Wiseman Dlamini’s passing this morning. On behalf of WBSA, we extend heartfelt condolences to family and friends. You are in our prayers and thoughts in this time of mourning. Rest in Peace Kwenza you will be sorely missed,” said the organization.

Dlamini began his basketball journey at the age of 13 when he was a learner at Filadelfia Special School in Soshanguve (Tshwane). He went on to represent the Gauteng junior basketball team and the U23 national team.

He contracted polio as a child which affected his right leg. He was later involved in an accident which affected his other leg. He uses crutches to walk, but when on the sports field he uses a wheelchair to play.

Dlamini was also an advocate for the development of upcoming disabled basketball players.

As the Gauteng wheelchair basketball team’s assistant coach, Wiseman Dlamini, he helped the team get three nomination in the Gauteng Sports Awards including Gauteng Ladies Wheelchair Basketball team win the Gauteng Sports Awards in 2021. He also got nominated for the Administrator of The Year Award last year.

Colleagues, fans and lovers of wheelchair basketball countrywide have paid tribute to the 42 year old on social media.
