South Africans Called to Rally Behind Proteas Women Ahead of World Cup Final

Government urges nation to support women’s cricket team as they prepare for maiden ICC World Cup final against India on Sunday, November 2.

Cabinet has called on all South Africans to throw their support behind the national women’s cricket team as they prepare to contest their first-ever International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Cricket World Cup final this weekend.

In a statement released on Thursday, Cabinet extended its best wishes to the Proteas Women ahead of Sunday’s showdown against India in what could be a historic moment for South African cricket.

The team secured their place in the final following a dominant performance in Guwahati, India, on Wednesday. Captain Laura Wolvaardt delivered an outstanding innings while star all-rounder Marizanne Kapp produced a devastating spell of bowling, claiming five wickets for just 20 runs to dismantle England’s batting lineup.

The comprehensive 125-run victory over England marked a watershed moment for South African women’s cricket, propelling the team into their first 50-over World Cup final.

“Their performance was electrifying, and they have established themselves as contenders on the global stage,” the Cabinet statement read, congratulating the team on their historic achievement.

Cabinet highlighted 2025 as an exceptional year for South African cricket across both formats and genders.

The men’s team captured the ICC Test Championship final earlier in the year, while the women’s team has now reached the ODI World Cup final.

The statement also noted the Proteas Women’s recent success in T20 cricket, having reached consecutive Women’s T20 World Cup finals in 2023 and 2024. Their historic victory over Australia in Canberra in 2024 was singled out as a particularly memorable achievement.

Cricket South Africa praised the team’s resilience, strong batting depth, and adaptable bowling attack, emphasizing that the players continue to inspire and break new ground across all formats of the game.

South Africa and India will clash on Sunday, 2 November 2025, with both teams vying for the coveted World Cup title. Captains of both ladies teams pose with the trophy.
