State employees getting SASSA grants drops

In August 2021, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) performed an analysis of the database and found that 21 355 public servants are fraudulently receiving social grants.

From that number 16 399 were found on Persal and SASSA database.

To give effect to legislation prescripts and to avoid continued payment of grants to ineligible persons, the Agency lapsed 16399 beneficiaries.

The remaining 4 956 beneficiaries include those who have already passed on, under investigation while others have reached the age of 18.

SASSA is obliged to take reasonable action to prevent continuous payment of social grants to ineligible persons. These include verifying the applicants against the latest available databases.

The Agency has sent letters to all Gauteng Heads of departments where government employees were found to possibly be benefiting from social grants. Some of the departments have already implemented consequence management and have raised overpayment against the employees.

All government employees receiving all types of social grants excluding Foster Care Grant should visit their nearest SASSA Local Offices for review to determine if they still qualify to receive the social grants.
