One wounded suspect is under police guard in hospital after surviving a shootout with the Hawks in Randfontein on Friday afternoon, December 10.
Another suspect died on scene in the joint crime intelligence operation led by the Hawks.
“An intelligence driven operation was conducted with the Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence, Tracker Connect, SAPS Highway Patrol, Badboyz Security, GTP Saturation Unit and Vision Tactical Security after information about suspects committing ‘Rolex robberies’ and house robberies was received,” said Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo.
The suspects were spotted in an Audi hatchback driving in Randfontein (in the West Rand) and instructed to stop.
A shootout ensued which resulted in the death of a suspect and an injury to the other. The law enforcement team escaped the shooting unharmed.
The deceased suspect was found with a police appointment card. This is only issued to police officers as formal confirmation of identification.
Police seized two firearms with ammunition, cellphones and registration plates.
According to the cops, it was discovered that the suspects’ vehicle was linked to a earlier hijacking case in July that occurred in Parkview.
“Investigation, to link the suspects to other crimes, is continuing. Cases of murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen property have been registered,” said the Hawks.
The arrested suspect will appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court as soon as he is released from the hospital.
