Teenager sentenced to 30 years in jail for rape

A 17 year old boy has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping three younger boys in Katlehong, south of Ekurhuleni recently.

The first incident took place two years ago, at an open field at Extension 9 Katlehong South, where the accused teen raped a nine year old boy who was sent by his grandmother to her aunt to borrow cash, but never come back in time.

About a month later, the teen struck again at Extension 20, where he raped a 10 year old. The victim was sent by his mother to buy soft-drink at a local spaza shop but only to come back crying because of the pains he endured while being raped.

A few days passed after the second incident at Extension 20, the young perpetrator went to Vosloorus where he, for the third time, raped an eight year old boy. It’s reported that he forcefully dragged the little one while he was playing with his peers and sexually assaulted him.

“Through thorough investigations and dedication by the Investigating Officer Sargent Renny Matshavha of the Katlehong Family Violence, Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) all evidence she presented in court pointed to one accused person who is a grade 7 learner,” said Katlehong police spokesperson Constable Sivenkosi Mtwa.

During the court proceedings on Wednesday, March 30, the Judge’s sentencing was set as follows:

Count 1 Rape of a child – ten years imprisonment.
Count 2 Rape of a child – ten years imprisonment
Count 3 Rape of a child – ten years imprisonment.

Court ordered that Counts 2 and 3 run concurrently with sentence on the first count.

Katlehong Station Commander, Brigadier Vesi welcomed the sentencing and hope it will send a strong message to young people who commit crime and assume that they will get away with it.

The convicted teenager is believed to be the youngest recorded serial rapist in the history of South Africa.
