Two die, four injured in joburg CBD blaze

Two people have died and four were injured after a fire broke out at a residential building in the Johannesburg Inner-City on Sunday, January 21.

According to City spokesperson Nana Radebe, the fire was spreading quickly affecting different levels of the building because of the combustible material used.

“The fire operation continues at the storey building that was engulfed with flames earlier this morning. Two people jumped from the second floor and three people were rescued from the balcony”, says Radebe.

Radebe added that four people have been transported to the health care facilities for further medical care.

Councilor Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, MMC of Safety said the City of Joburg EMS received a call about a residential building fire at in the early hours of Sunday morning. It is reported that two people jumped from the second floor, and three people were rescued from the balcony.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation and rescue operations are still underway.

“EMS will conduct preliminary investigations to determine what caused the fire after firefighting operations are done,” said MMC Tshwaku.

The blaze incident occurs just months after Joburg experienced yet another fire that ripped through a five-storey building that was occupied by squatters and homeless people, killing at least 74 people, including 12 children.
