South Africa’s National Minimum Wage (NMW) will rise from R27.58 to R28.79 per hour on 1 March 2025.
For employees working a standard 40-hour week, this translates to an increase from approximately R4,776.86 to R4,986.43 per month.
Workers in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) will see their hourly rate increase from R15.16 to R15.83, resulting in a monthly wage increase from about R2,625.71 to R2,741.76.
Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth emphasized that employers are legally obligated to comply with the new rates, stating, “Every employer may not pay wages that are below the minimum wage.” employees are encouraged to review their pay slips to ensure they receive the updated wages starting in March.
The NMW Act applies universally, excluding members of the South African National Defence Force, the National Intelligence Agency, and the South African Secret Service.
Volunteers, who do not receive remuneration, are also exempt. The NMW excludes allowances for transport, tools, food, accommodation, payments in kind, tips, bonuses, and gifts.
