World AIDS Day Commemorated

Citizens share views on HIV and AIDS

Every year, on the 1st of December, World AIDS Day is commemorated in South Africa and globally to raise awareness about the ongoing health challenges posed by HIV/AIDS and to disseminate information about the importance of precautionary measures and early testing.

This year’s theme, “Equal Rights, Equal Care,” underscores the importance of ensuring equal rights, dignity, and access to health for all. Some of the country’s citizens have shared their thoughts about World AIDS Day.

Mavis Shange (19): “I don’t have anything against those who are living with HIV because in the eyes of God, we are still the same. There are many chronic illnesses that are more dangerous than the HIV virus.”

Asanda Luyolo (48): “I think this day is important because some of us have lost many, including our loved ones, due to this virus. I would like to urge people to protect themselves by using condoms and all available contraceptives. It is so sad in this country as young girls fall pregnant and get infected.”

Nhlanhla Motaung (32): “There is still a lot of stigma against those who are living with HIV, which makes it even more difficult for patients to fetch their treatment at a clinic without fear of being judged. More awareness is needed so that people can be educated.”

Gladys Mthimunye (44): “I would like to take this moment and thank community healthcare workers, nurses, doctors, and everybody involved in the fight against HIV.”

According to UNAIDS, approximately 8.2 million people in South Africa are living with HIV, representing the largest HIV epidemic in the world.

Fight against pandemic continues

Despite significant progress in HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, South Africa continues to be one of the countries most affected by the epidemic.

World AIDS Day serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges, the importance of continued education, and the need to combat stigma while supporting those affected by the virus.
