Zama-Zama dies during gun battle in Germiston

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) in conjunction with other law enforcement officers were out on an operation against illegal mining at about 4:30am on January 21.

The operation was conducted at the Marathon Informal Settlement near Primrose, Germiston, when the Officers got involved in a shoot-out.

Officers were confronted by a group of men who opened fire at them with a rifle and 9mm handguns.

According to the metro police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato Officers tactically responded and a shoot-out ensued which led to one suspect being fatally wounded.

“The suspect was declared dead on the scene and another was wounded and taken to OR Tambo Memorial Hospital by Gauteng emergency services.

“Another suspect, who was in possession of a rifle, fled the scene while four suspects were apprehended and detained at Primrose SAPS. Unlicensed firearms were seized,” said Makgato.

The EMPD acting head Julius Mkhwanazi said, “a repeat of the Stilfontein case would not be allowed in Ekurhuleni.”

He continued, “Minimum force will be used to tackle criminal syndicates as they are armed and dangerous,” he added.
