China-Backed Solar Plant Powers South Africa’s Energy Future
South Africa’s Redstone Solar Thermal Power Plant, recently completed in September 2024, offers a new solution to the country’s power crisis.
Located in the Northern Cape, the plant uses Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology to capture and store solar energy, enabling it to supply electricity even after sunset.
This cutting-edge project, made possible by Chinese expertise, is designed to reduce load-shedding, strengthen energy security, and support climate goals.
The 100 MW Redstone Concentrated Solar Thermal Power (CSP) Project is not only the first CSP project in sub-Saharan Africa, but also one of the largest renewable energy investment projects in South Africa.
It marks a key step toward reducing reliance on coal and boosting South Africa’s renewable energy capacity.
The Redstone project highlights a successful collaboration between South Africa and China, aiming to create a sustainable, resilient energy future for the country.
The Project was built by SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of POWERCHINA.
It is not only the first (Tower) CSP project in sub-Saharan Africa, but also one of the largest renewable energy investment projects in South Africa.
Mthoko Ngidi, project manager of its South African partner, highlighted the project’s contribution to local employment, with over 2,500 jobs created in South Africa and 650 of the jobs taken by employees from the local community, fostering economic growth within the region.
On top of that more than 400 local engineers and technicians have received training, thereby enhancing the overall skill of the local workforce through knowledge and expertise sharing.
BRICS partnership payoffs
BRICS has become a prominent advocate for developing countries on the global stage. It has provided a platform for the Global South countries to find alternatives to West-led economic structures and promote fairer global governance.
Emmanuel Matambo, research director of the Center for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg, said that BRICS has provided more funding options for the development of emerging economies and strengthened the voice of the Global South in international relations.
The Redstone Solar Thermal Power Plant stands as a powerful example of the BRICS countries working together to solve global challenges. With China providing the technology and South Africa hosting the project, the plant demonstrates how BRICS nations can share resources, knowledge, and innovation to address mutual needs.
