China Showcases Digital Empowerment for Women and Girls

Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping and UNESCO Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education, joined UN Under-Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous in Beijing on Tuesday (October 14) to visit an exhibition celebrating China’s progress in digital and intelligent empowerment for women and girls.

The exhibition, which opened as a side event of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, highlights how technological innovation and digital transformation are helping to promote gender equality and women’s participation in various sectors of society.

Displays featured examples of how China has integrated smart technologies into education, entrepreneurship, and public services to enhance opportunities for women, particularly in rural and underprivileged areas.

The exhibition also showcased initiatives that encourage women to engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as digital literacy programs designed to bridge the gender gap in the digital economy.

Peng Liyuan and Sima Bahous toured the exhibition and viewed multimedia presentations that demonstrated the positive impact of China’s digital inclusion policies.

The event underscored China’s ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment as part of its national development agenda and its cooperation with international organizations such as UNESCO and UN Women.

The Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, taking place this week in Beijing, brings together representatives from governments, international organizations, and civil society to discuss global strategies for achieving gender equality and empowering women in the digital era.
