Ratanda Police have launched an inquest following the discovery of the decomposed body of a 30-year-old man, identified as Fana “Shesha” Nkosi, who had been reported missing earlier recently.
According to police spokesperson Constable Moss Maluleke, Nkosi was reported missing on Monday, May 19, at approximately 3pm. His family alerted the police after failing to locate him, prompting a search party that continued until 22:00 that night without success.
“The search resumed on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, with support from the Ratanda SAPS, the Ekurhuleni Water Wing Unit, and Nkosi’s family. A helicopter and drone unit were also deployed. Later that afternoon, at around 14:30, search teams discovered Nkosi’s decomposed body trapped along the edge of the Blesbokspruit River. He was identified at the scene by his father. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) declared him dead,” said Constable Maluleke.
Police investigations revealed that Nkosi was last seen on April 9 by his family and friends. It is alleged that on that day, after collecting mealie meal from Hall’s Farm near Sedaven with two friends, the trio attempted to cross the river.
While the two friends managed to cross safely, Nkosi was reportedly caught in the river and drowned. The friends allegedly failed to inform the family or authorities at the time of the incident.
An inquest case has been opened and investigations are ongoing. Police are appealing to the community for any information that could assist in the case.
