Deputy President Mashatile Leads Tambo Wreath Laying Ceremony

Deputy President Paul Mashatile will lead the annual wreath laying ceremony honouring liberation icon Oliver Reginald Tambo at the Tamboville Memorial Site in Wattville on Monday morning, October 27.

The ceremony marks Tambo’s birthday and forms part of the City of Ekurhuleni’s month-long commemoration of the freedom fighter’s life and legacy under the theme “O.R Tambo, Champion of Freedom, architect of global solidarity”.

October has been designated O.R Tambo month in Ekurhuleni, where the anti-apartheid leader was conferred the freedom of the city. Members of the Tambo family will join Deputy President Mashatile and other prominent political leaders in laying wreaths of remembrance at the heritage site.

The city has partnered with the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation and the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) to deliver an impactful programme celebrating the lives of both O.R and his wife Adelaide Tambo.

Following the wreath laying ceremony, a round table discussion featuring thought leaders, eminent historians and veteran activists will be held at the O.R Tambo International Airport conference centre on Thursday, October 30.

The commemorations will continue into November with the O.R Tambo Choral Music Festival on Saturday, November 1 at the O.R Tambo Narrative Centre. The festival, themed “Imvelaphi-Our Origins”, will explore and elevate indigenous musical traditions through choral expressions, featuring music groups from across the city.

An O.R Tambo exhibition will be hosted at the O.R Tambo Narrative Centre on Thursday, November 20, serving as a precursor to the G20 summit and promoting the city’s rich tourism offering.
