Gauteng and Fujian Forge Stronger Economic Ties to Drive Industrial Growth and Innovation

A new era of industrial collaboration and investment is on the horizon as Gauteng strengthens its strategic partnership with Fujian, one of China’s leading economic powerhouses.

Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Mr Lebogang Maile, recently held a high-level meeting today with the Vice Chairman of the Fujian Provincial Committee and an accompanying delegation to deepen economic ties and fast-track joint projects under the banner of innovation, localisation and sustainable development.

The engagement focused on aligning Gauteng’s Growing Gauteng Together 2030 (GGT2030) strategy with Fujian’s ambitious “2-3-4 Project”, a blueprint aimed at fostering regional and international industrial cooperation. At the centre of the talks were game-changing initiatives set to redefine Gauteng’s role as Africa’s gateway for investment and innovation.

Building a Manufacturing Powerhouse

A key highlight of the meeting was the twinning of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) between Gauteng and Fujian.

This initiative will see the co-development of smart industrial parks that bring together the best of South African and Chinese industrial expertise.

The goal is to position Gauteng as Africa’s leading hub for advanced manufacturing, leveraging Chinese capital and technology while driving local job creation.

“This partnership has the potential to fast-track Gauteng’s reindustrialisation through localisation and high-tech manufacturing,” said MEC Maile. “We are not only attracting investment, but also building capabilities in sectors that will define the future.”

Powering the Green Economy

Both parties expressed strong commitment to green energy collaboration, particularly in the manufacturing of lithium and sodium batteries, which are crucial to the energy storage needs of electric vehicles and renewable energy grids. Gauteng aims to become a continental leader in battery production and energy transition technologies.

Driving Auto Industry Growth

Another significant area of cooperation is the localisation of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) and automotive parts manufacturing. In collaboration with firms such as JETOUR Global, Gauteng will facilitate skills development and infrastructure investment to support Chinese auto manufacturers setting up local assembly and component plants.

Tech and Innovation Partnerships

In a bid to boost the province’s innovation ecosystem, Gauteng and Fujian also agreed to establish joint AI laboratories and innovation incubators, facilitated through partnerships with the CSIR and the Innovation Hub. These centres will focus on advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, robotics, and big data, laying the groundwork for a digital economy that benefits local communities.

Boosting Trade and Tourism

The meeting also explored ways to increase tourism flows and improve logistics by expanding air cargo routes between Fujian and OR Tambo International Airport. Strengthened aviation links are expected to enhance bilateral trade and create opportunities for tourism operators in both regions.

A Bold Step Toward Shared Prosperity

This growing partnership cements Gauteng’s place as China’s primary African partner in industrial development, technology and trade. With mutual benefits spanning green growth, advanced manufacturing and digital innovation, both regions are charting a bold path forward.

“Together, we are unlocking new markets, new skills, and new futures,” MEC Maile concluded. “This is not just about economic ties — it’s about building shared prosperity.”
