Gauteng Launches Free Public WiFi Sites in Daveyton

The Gauteng MEC for e-Government Research and Development, Bonginkosi Dhlamini, on Thursday, December 5 launched the Daveyton Main Clinic and Lesiba Secondary School Public WiFi sites.

According to MEC Dhlamini, the hotspots are among 30 completed sites of the Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN), which are set to connect government institutions and provide free public WiFi to the residents of Gauteng.

“As you know, our department has been given a mandate to provide universal connectivity because data and WiFi these days are very important. Daveyton is one of the 30 hotspots that we are launching in the province so that there are no more queues at the clinic and everything will be digitalized. The free WiFi will not only benefit people who are using the facility, but communities will also be able to connect from the outside. We cannot leave our people outside the digital economy.”

Nohlanhla Xaba, Area Manager for Daveyton Clinic, said, “We are super excited about being chosen for digitalization because this will assist the staff and attract young people to the clinic.”

Some of the local residents also expressed their words of appreciation and gratitude for the free public WiFi.

Thando Mdlalose (23) stated, “Data is very expensive, and I’m happy because I now know that I will come to the clinic to connect if I want to do research for my school assignment.”

Nokuzola Sithole (29) added, “I would like to thank the government as this is part of community development to improve our township.”

Of the 30 launched hotspots, these include clinics, libraries, schools, and community centres.

Residents will be able to access government services online and are urged to refrain from downloading pornographic or explicit material.
