Gauteng Tackles Underage Drinking at ‘Pens-Down’ Parties

As learners across Gauteng prepare to celebrate the end of their final exams, provincial authorities are launching a major campaign to curb underage drinking and ensure “Pens-Down” parties remain safe.

Gauteng Finance and Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile issued a stern warning, calling on learners to celebrate responsibly and avoid alcohol and drugs during the traditional post-exam festivities.

“The Gauteng Liquor Act of 2003 prohibits the selling or supplying of liquor to anyone under the age of 18,” Maile said. “All schools are declared alcohol-free zones, which means no teacher, parent, or learner should possess alcohol on school premises or during school-related functions.”

The MEC warned that anyone caught supplying alcohol to minors will face prosecution, while licensed liquor outlets found hosting or allowing underage drinking will have their licences suspended or revoked by the Gauteng Liquor Board.

Enforcement Campaign Underway

Starting in early November, the Gauteng Liquor Board will roll out an “Anti-Pens Down Campaign” across social media platforms, liquor outlets, and educational institutions.

The initiative will be conducted in partnership with the South African Police Service, School Governing Bodies, and Community Policing Forums.

“Our liquor inspectors, together with SAPS designated liquor officers, will be conducting various compliance blitzes across the province,” Maile said. “This will involve checking venues, cracking down on illegal sales, and making sure the law is observed accordingly.”

Tragic Reminder

Maile referenced the 2022 Enyobeni Tavern tragedy as a painful reminder of the consequences of non-compliance with liquor regulations. The incident, which claimed multiple young lives, has remained a sobering example of the dangers of irresponsible alcohol consumption.

“I call on parents, communities and young people to work with government to ensure that these celebrations in the province take place in a safe and secure environment,” he said.

How to Report Violations

Members of the public can report the sale of alcohol to minors or underage drinking at events by contacting SAPS or the Gauteng Liquor Board via email at Liquor.Queries@gauteng.gov.za or WhatsApp at 082 497 3254 or 060 532 4027. Anonymity is guaranteed for all reports.

Despite the strict warnings, Maile wished learners well as they complete their exams and encouraged them to celebrate their academic achievements safely.

“Together, we can make Gauteng a place where young people thrive responsibly,” he concluded.
