Heroes Fun Run & Walk Honors Sharpeville Legacy

This morning, Sharpeville residents, fitness enthusiasts, and government officials gathered near the old Sharpeville Police Station on Zwane Street to participate in the “Heroes Fun Run & Walk” commemorative event marking Human Rights Day.

The event, aptly themed “Sharpeville is not a massacre – Put yourself in their shoes,” featured an 8km run and a 5km walk option.

Participants of all ages, dressed in white t-shirts, took part in the iconic walk that symbolically retraces the route of the historic march undertaken by Sharpeville residents in 1960 when they rebelled against the apartheid pass laws.

“Honouring the past, stepping into the future” was the powerful message displayed on promotional materials, reflecting the dual purpose of the event: remembering the sacrifices made during the struggle against apartheid while promoting community wellness and solidarity.

Among the participants was Director General Mr. Edward Mosuwe, representing the provincial government.

His presence underscored the significance of the event as part of the broader Human Rights Day programme organised by the Gauteng government in Sharpeville.

Local participants expressed appreciation for how the event created space for connection and storytelling.

The event was made possible through collaboration between several organizations, including the Gauteng provincial government, Sedibeng municipality, Bram Block, DDK, Emfuleni Athletics Club, and the Sharpeville community.

Registration for the event was offered free of charge with participants receiving a goodie bag with a medals and refreshments for the road.

As South Africa continues to build on its democratic foundations, events like the Heroes Fun Run & Walk serve as important reminders of the journey traveled and the ongoing commitment to human rights and dignity for all citizens.
